About Agia Roumeli - Crete (Chania)
Situated at the Southern coast of Crete at the exit of the Samaria Gorge, Agia Roumeli is a small village with 120 permanent residents. The village is built on the site of the ancient town Tara, a well-known independent town flourishing during the Roman period. Agia Roumeli village is usually quiet enough, except in late spring and summer. In summer it is very crowded especially from the hikers of Samaria, but when the last boat has left, the small port,
it regains its calmness and beauty. It is worth seeing the ruins of the Doric city Tara that flourished mostly during the Roman period. There have been found ruins of a temple, possibly dedicated to Apollo or Artemis.
It is also worth visiting the church of Virgin Mary, built on the ruins of the ancient temple dedicated to Apollo and Artemis (Diana) and the ruins of the castle on a hill close to the village. At a distance of one hour’s walking, following the path, there is the Byzantine monastery of Agios Pavlos, at the homonymous beach. For those choosing to stay in Agia Roumeli, or for whoever is too tired to move around after the 6 – 7 hours hiking in the Samaria gorge, accommodation is available, as well as some taverns and cafes for food and drink.

Holidays in Agia Roumeli - Crete
Agia Roumeli, is a small village on the shores of the Libyan sea, on the western side of the island of crete. Breathtakingly beautiful in its sheer simplicity, it is situated west of the town of Sfakia, and built near the ancient ruins of Tara,  on the edge of the Samaria gorge. The village is named for the rebuilt church of Agia Roumeli, a local saint. The current location of the village was selected folowing the earthquakes of 1954, and what a location it is!!! Not only is the sea crystal clear but the sand is pristine white, so that the whitewashed houses of the hospitable villagers seem to meld with the sand of the foreshore  where they are built. Visiting  Agia Roumeli, is like moving back in time, the area is completely unspoilt,  and mostly undiscovered . The locals who adhere to the age old customs of the region, are also friendly and affable. The location is perfect for unwinding, forgetting the cares of the world and indulging in the drinking of the local wines, notably tsikoudia, and eating the local cuisine for which the island is famous. This is not a destination for the sophisticated tourist, but more for the discerning traveller looking for a laidback, and unforgettable expirience.
Agia Roumeli beach ...
At a distance of 56 kilometers from Chania at the South, just at the exit of the Samaria gorge it is found the beach of Aghia Roumeli, which is actually the beach in front of the homonymous village. Well organised, it offers some accommodation facilities, food and drink and facilities for swimming and sunbathing (sun beds, umbrellas, sea sports ). The beach is pretty popular to the hikers who cross the Samaria gorge because of the refreshing swimming they can enjoy, before taking the last boat to Chora Sfakion and the return bus to Chania.
