About Almeritha - Crete
Holidays in Almeritha are holidays in a stress-free zone. This sleepy place has just enough development to provide all mod cons … and nowhere near enough to disturb you with discos, nightclubs or rowdy revellers.
In Almeritha, holidays are balmy days on a beautiful beach, where the sands slope gently into a clear blue sea …sailing out to the little island of Karga – a fabulous focal point in the bay …driving to local villages and hamlets – picturesque Plaka and old-world Kokkino Chorio, so Greek it was the chosen location for Zorba …hiring a bike to cycle to secluded coves. Along with a scattering of bars and tavernas – where a leisurely lunch is still deliciously cheap, holidays in Almeritha come complete with ample gift shops to mooch in, a dramatically scenic White Mountain backdrop, and a range of watersports in the heat of the summer. Holidays to Almeritha could be in the peace and privacy of your own apartment – accompanied by gorgeous views if you've chosen the Villa Artemis for your self-catering stay ... Or enjoying the service, facilities and cool Cretan style of the Almerida Beach Hotel.
A relaxing spot that couples and families would revel in, this former fishing village is a rather recent entry to the 'resort' category, so shoulder-to-shoulder hotels are notably absent. While there may well be late deals for last minute holidays, in Almeritha you'd probably be wiser to plan ahead.

Almeritha Quick Info
A large, bustling village, full of colour and beauty, with a great sandy beach, whose relaxed pace of life is a fine example for world-weary travellers. Over the last decade or so, we've watched Almeritha being slowly transformed from the original, tiny, undiscovered fishing harbour and although it has grown slightly over the years, it still retains the archetypal Greek fishing village atmosphere which originally attracted us and which has become a firm favourite with guests looking for a good beach, relaxing atmosphere and a generous dollop of local colour.
Backed by the White Mountains towering behind and flanked by low cliffs, the shallow, sandy bay of Almeritha is the ideal base for exploring in spring and autumn and the perfect place for a relaxing family holiday. Behind the village the lovely rolling, wooded countryside is still completely unspoilt; stately cypress trees punctuate the groves of silvery-green olives with their dark-green feathery tips and the dry stone walls of the fields are almost smothered in a riot of wild flowers in the spring. In autumn, the ripe grapes are ready for picking and pressing by foot in the 'patetiri' (the outdoor wine presses) attached to almost every house in the pretty little villages of Gavalohori, Douliana or Aspro. As more people have gradually discovered Almeritha's charms, the village dn the countryside behind Almeritha have seen changes which include some additional building, but nothing has spoilt the lovely bay or altered the slow pace of life. The choice of tavernas is now second to none for such a comparatively small place and all are situated temptingly on the seashore. The local community makes sure that the beach is kept clean. The nearest town, Kalives (just 4km from Almeritha and with plenty of shops), can be reached via economical local taxi and from here there is a more regular bus service into Chania.
