. History dates that this cave was inhabitated as early as the Neolithic Period. Artifacts such as bronze shields and statues were found here and now reside in the Iraklio Archaeological Museum. The Melidoni Cave has a tragic past. During 1824, over 300 Melidoni people hid here to flee the Turkish army. They were discovered and died when a fire was lit at the entrance of the cave.
