and hiding places. Caves have also invoked a sense of mystery and wonder. On Greek holidays Crete is a fantastic choice, as there are over 3000 caves as recorded by the Greek Speleological Society. Be adventurous and
explore some of them on your holidays to Crete. Said to be the richest cave on the island, the cave of Sentoni has a decorated interior of magnificent splendor. It lies in the district of Rethymnon and is at an altitude of 800m.

The Diktaian Cave (Dikti) is considered to be the birthplace of Zeus. Located on the outskirts of Psihro, a path leads explorers down into this place of long-ago worship. Choose to travel by foot or by mule. Proceed with caution as stalagtites are plentiful. Tour guides are available for a price and are self-appointed! This cave is cool even during the summer due to it's location of 1000m above sea level. The Idaian Cave atLassithi Plateau, on the on Mount Psiloritis is a sacred cave. Mythology suggests that baby Zeus was hidden here from the Kronos.

. History dates that this cave was inhabitated as early as the Neolithic Period. Artifacts such as bronze shields and statues were found here and now reside in the Iraklio Archaeological Museum. There are no public buses and it is closed during the winter. Donkeys are available for the trek. On the journey, there are thousands of sheep to
see out in pastures and in spring, thousands of flowers. Once there, enjoy the panoramic views of the Aegean Sea

The Melidoni Cave has a tragic past. During 1824, over 300 Melidoni people hid here to flee the Turkish army. They were discovered and died when a fire was lit at the entrance of the cave. A torch is recommended and the admission is free. Crete is an island of warm seas, beaches and adventures. It's streets are filled with the sights and sounds of fresh fish, cafes and song.
