Fodele is particularly known on account of the fact that it is the birthplace of the world famous painter El Greco. During his stay in Spain, the painter Theotokopoulos was called El Greco. The village Fodele has a nice square with a statue in honour of El Greco. Fodele is situated in a very beautiful, green environment. It is a friendly village with some small handcraft shops. Close to the thick tree is a nice tavern. The beach of fodele is just outside the village. Fodele village comprises an oasis of freshness, especially for the hot days of summer. The village's square offers itself for relaxation and gives the chance to visitors to enjoy their coffee or lunch next to the river underneath the perennial plane trees. The beach of Fodele is situated 3 kilometres far from the homonymous picturesque village at the North, and 23 kilometres far from Heraklion (via the National Road) at the West, some 1000 metres off the National Road Heraklion-Rethymno. It is a sandy beach affected by the "meltemia" (northern summer winds). Close enough to Heraklion, it is a well organised beach with accommodation facilities in hotels and rooms to let, taverns and cafes for food and drink and swimming and sunbathing facilities (sunbeds, umbrellas etc); sea sport facilities are also available.
Getting to Fodele - Crete
Access from Heraklion is easy, as public buses run regularly; you can also use a taxi and of course rented or private car and motorbikes. It is recommended to reach the beach following the old road. You should drive fore some 2 to 2,5 kilometres more, but the landscape is better and the way more interesting. And, you may combine your swimming and sunbathing with a sightseeing of the area; and don't forget that Fodele has been the birth place of the famous painter El Greco (Domenicos Theotokopoulos) and there is a Museum about him in the village
