About Gerani - Crete
With relaxation written through it like a stick of rock, this is bliss for couples or families coming to Crete to unwind. Holidays in Gerani are gloriously laid back and leisurely. There's a Blue Flag shore for serious sun-worship, a clutch of bars and tavernas to stroll to in the evening, and a sprinkling of self-catering holiday retreats, clustered round their pretty pool and set right beside the sea. On Gerani, all the action is focused at the water's edge …but don't think for a minute that 'action' means frenetic, or even energetic. Rarely crowded, the long beach is a mix of sand, shingle and pebble stretches. Watersports and beach volleyball provide excellent exercise and an even tan for those who feel inclined to indulge … and make great spectator sports for those who are happy to give them a miss.
After dark activity is largely table talk in the handful of bars and traditional tavernas – where an evening out is still comparatively cheap. Holidays in Gerani aren't big on bright lights and nightclubs – so killer heels can be replaced by casual comfort. But when you're ready to up the tempo a couple of notches, there are discos 2km away in Platanias, and a 10km taxi journey could see you sampling the busy bars and restaurants on Chania harbour.
So whether you've chosen it well in advance or you're booking a last minute holiday, in Gerani you may feel you've found the best of both worlds. |

Gerani Quick Info
Gerani is a sleepy roadside village that spreads down to a 2.5 kilometre sand and shingle beach that has won awards for its cleanliness. With a small selection of shops, bars and restaurants, the emphasis here is on relaxation, but for something a little more adventurous, the Gerani Cave is waiting to be explored. For a livelier pace, head into Chania 10km away. With a modern, cosmopolitan feel, Chania retains its history and traditions with a maze of old Venetian houses and an impressive market in the old town. The harbour area offers nightlife for all tastes and the old town has more traditional - and cheaper fare. The long sand and shingle beach is a great place to enjoy a peaceful day in the sun with the enticing Aegean sea waiting to cool you off.
Local tavernas can provide you with a flavour of Crete with local dishes and fresh fish always part of the menu. International cuisine is equally well supplied, satisfying most tastes. With the emphasis on relaxation this sleepy town has only a handful of venues for the party animal. Evenings generally focus on food, drink and conversation. Not known for its extensive shopping opportunities Gerani will cater for your souvenir needs, for a more sophisticated choice Chania is the place to go. While you're here, you should see as much of this beautiful island as you can. It's full of contrasts with lush vegetation and rugged, cavernous landscape competing for your attention. The interior of the island is well worth a visit as is the coastline, and neighbouring islands. For some cosmopolitan style head to Chania where you can watch the world go by or shop until you drop. |
