Gerani is a sleepy roadside village that spreads down to a 2.5 kilometre sand and shingle beach that has won awards for its cleanliness. With a small selection of shops, bars and restaurants, the emphasis here is on relaxation, but for something a little more adventurous, the Gerani Cave is waiting to be explored. For a livelier pace, head into Chania 10km away. With a modern, cosmopolitan feel, Chania retains its history and traditions with a maze of old Venetian houses and an impressive market in the old town. The harbour area offers nightlife for all tastes and the old town has more traditional - and cheaper fare.
