About Ierapetra - Crete
Ierapetra is the most southerly town in Europe and is known for its particularly mild climate. The town of Ierapetra has been in existence since ancient times, when it had important trade links with North Africa. Roman remains, a Venetian fort, a Turkish mosque and minaret still exist. The journey from Heraklion takes about one and a half hour. In the centre of the town there is a long promenade with lots of shops, tavernas and hotels, and the little harbour with its Venetian fort. Many of the local inhabitants of the area around Ierapetra work in agriculture, and so it is common to see the long green houses for growing vegetables, while inland there are lovely pine forests and olive groves. The kilometre long sand and shingle beach with numerous attractive little coves, has two beaches which have been awarded the Blue European Flag. Near to Ierapetra, there are many little villages.
The region of Ierapetra in Crete lends itself particularly for walking, or for boat trips to the nearby bays, to the golden Island of ‘Crisi” or Koufonisi with its unusual crushed-shell beache s. There are many interesting outings to be made, for example a visit to Agios Nikolaos, to the vast Lassithi Plain with its windmills, to the Butterfly Gorge or to the beautiful palm strewn beach at Vai. |

Holidays in Ierapetra - Crete
Ierapetra is found on the southern coast of Crete at its eastern end, 20 miles south of the popular resort of Agios Nikolaos and 63 miles from Heraklion airport. Ierapetra appeal to those who enjoy a resort mixed with a genuine working Crete town. Ierapetra is one of the largest towns in Crete, in a rich agricultural area, and is therefore not entirely dominated by tourism though it has become a popular choice in recent years. It has an interesting mix of modern and historic areas and retains much of its character and charm in the older areas.
Near Ierapetra is the Old Town, known as Kato Mera, with its narrow lanes and interesting mix of architecture and monuments, testament to the town’s strategic importance to Romans, Turks and Venetians who have all occupied this the southernmost point of Europe. Ierapetra has warm sunny weather almost guaranteed due to its position facing Africa. Other focal points of Ierapetra are the harbour with its Venetian castle and clock tower, and the promenade, both areas busy with waterfront restaurants, tavernas and bars that attract locals and tourists alike, along with a couple of clubs. Ierapetra have miles of different beaches to the east of the town, mostly of black sand and safe for swimming. Most of the important beaches from Makris Gialos to Myrtos have EU blue flag status. Plenty of watersports like scuba diving, sailing and windsurfing. Explore and you will find small coves and more rugged coastline. From Ierapetra you should visit some of the small traditional Crete villages in the area and enjoy the peaceful old-fashioned tavernas. After strolling round the Old Town and visiting Ierapetra archaeology museum you can take other popular excursions which include ancient Knossos, Agios Nikolaos, a busy lively harbour town sitting on the western end of the scenic Gulf of Mirabello, inland gorges, and boat trips to Chrissi Island, Spinalonga with its fortress, the attractive coast town of Sitia and the famous beach at Vai.
