About Sfakia - Crete (Chania)
The Sfakia Province is well known for the Samaria Gorge which attracts many visitors to Crete but it is a fabulous choice for a holiday of pure relaxation and quiet fishing villages in tranquil surroundings. If you're staying near the area, it's a great day trip from Chora Sfakion to Paleochora. If you want to get away from it all, spend a few weeks in a remote waterside location - absolute paradise. The main town of the Sfakia Province is Chora Sfakion, which is a hub of activity in the summer with trekkers arriving by boat to take a bus back to Chania, Rethymnon, or Iraklio. But if you are there early or late in the season, it can make a very pleasant place to stay for a few days. The town, like many in Greece, is built amphitheatre style surrounding the port. During World War II, thousands of Allied troops were evacuated by sea from Chora Sfakion after the Battle of Crete.

Holidays in Sfakia - Crete
From Chora Sfakion, you can take a small boat to the west that stops at beautiful Loutro, Agia Roumeli (the base of the Samaria Gorge), Sougia, and finally Paleohora (3 hours).. During the summer, you can also take a boat to Gavdos island. Loutro is one of the prettiest places I've seen and an idyllic choice for those that want a quiet, relaxing holiday. The surroundings are truly spectacular. In fact, you can only reach Loutro by boat, or with boundless energy on foot. The town of Loutro circles the only natural harbour on the south coast of Crete, and the ancient port of Phoenix and Anopolis. Pretty white and blue tavernas and hotels are set against the mountains behind. There is a small pebble beach at Loutro, but for better beaches you canpaddle a small boat to your own private sand cove, or take a boat or trek to the magnificent Sweat Water beach, so named for the freshwater that comes from the rocks, or Marmara Beach.Agia Roumeli is not particularly a destination on it's own, but is where the weary trekkers emerge from the Samaria Gorge, and to them I'm sure it looks like paradise. There are a few places to stay, tavernas, and a small beach. Near town the beach is pebbles but if you venture up to the end of the beach you'll find black sand (watch out, it's very, very HOT!)
Sfakia beaches ...
In Chora Sfakion itself there is a very pleasant pebble beach at the western end of the village know as Vrissi (‘spring’). Fresh water from the mountains trickles into the sea here and provides the village with its water supply.
A 20-minute walk along the road towards Anopolis brings you to the stone beach at Ilingas, where there is also a taverna and some caves for shade. The footpath to Loutro crosses the large and famous Sweetwater beach, in Greek Glika Nera, so called because fresh water lies just beneath the sand and can be reached easily with a little digging. For those who prefer not to walk along this path, a fishing boat takes passengers to Sweetwater from Chora Sfakion every morning during the season and returns in the late afternoon.
There is a small taverna on the beach. To the east of Chora Sfakion, there are several beaches which can be reached by foot – Amoudi, which is down a track just before the large Vritomartis hotel, and Filaki, which is after the hotel along a dirt road. A road leading off the main road in Nomikiana takes you to secluded Vatalos beach, where a taverna operates in the summer. And finally there is a large sandy beach at Frangokastello, where the sea is shallow and suitable for small children
Getting to Sfakia in Chania - Crete
By car, bus or taxi from Chania or from Rethymno and Heraklion the most accessible route is via the turn off the National Road at Vrysses - in itself a pleasing village. Many will be familiar with the cafe that also doubles as the waiting area for connecting buses. Then, the route is up and over the Lefka Ori mountain range via the villages of Askifou and Imbros (great place to stop for Sfakian pies!). From Vrysses to Imbros takes roughly 45 minutes - though with stops (and you'll want to enjoy this, as it's one of the "Great Drives of Crete") you add some time
